Honorary Fellow Dr LAW Chi Lim (2023)

Dr. Law graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 1973. After his postgraduate training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) in New Zealand, and obtaining his membership from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), he returned to Hong Kong to serve in the public sector, including the Princess Margaret Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, and Nethersole Hospital, before commencing his private practice in 1982.

He was an elected member of the Hong Kong Representation Committee of the RCOG in 1983 and obtained his fellowship from the RCOG in 1993. He is a founding fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG) in 1988, as well as the Hong Kong College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (HKCOG) and Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) in 1994.

Throughout his 50 years of professional career, Dr. Law has worked tirelessly with enthusiasm and passion for the better for the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Hong Kong. Dr. Law’s ties to the HKCOG date back to its formation 35 years ago. He was a member of the working party for the formation of the HKCOG, and was 1 of 10 subscribers signing the Memorandum and Articles of Association of our College, when our college was finally formally incorporated in 1988. He was the Junior Vice President of our College from 1989 to 1993.

As Professor Allan Chang once said, “Nothing moves in Hong Kong without Robert”, Dr. Law has been a driving force in all aspects of the affairs of the College. Even before the formation of the HKCOG, being an active member (and later president) of the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society of Hong Kong, Dr. Law worked with unflagging energy in organising lectures for practicing O&G specialists- which subsequently became the model of continuing medical education (CME) activities within the medical profession.

Under his leadership as the CME Committee chairman, he led our College to implement one of the first CME programmes among all Specialty Colleges in Hong Kong. As an advocate in medical education, he was also an examiner for the Hong Kong Midwifery Board and was a committed clinical tutor of the HKCOG. Between 1999 and 2009, Dr. Law was the official spokesman for our College in handling inquiries from the media and was an icon of our field.

As a member of the board of trustees of the Hong Kong Obstetrical and Gynaecological Trust Fund since its inception in 1990, he has helped facilitate local research in the field of O&G. With devotion to contribute, he was actively involved in the Obstetrical and Gynaecological Society as a council member, as well as the Hong Kong Medical Association. His commitment and passion was well recognized and was elected as a member of the Council of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine for 10 years.

Dr. Law‘s involvement and contributions to the medical profession extend beyond the field of O&G. As a pioneer and educator in risk management in healthcare, he is a regular lecturer in various local healthcare complaint management and mediation courses. Committed to public services even as a private O&G specialist, he was the chairman of the Preliminary Investigation Committee (PIC) of the Medical Council of Hong Kong (MCHK) for 8 years and a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of North Lantau Hospital for 7 years. He was also the Panel Chairman for the Public Complaints Committee of the Hospital Authority (HA) from 2010 to 2020. Committed to continuous quality assurance in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, he is currently the chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee, and a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of the St Paul’s Hospital, Hong Kong.

Dr. Law is also an acknowledged expert in medical-legal matters in the field of O&G and has written over 150 expert opinions for medical legal cases concerning O&G that have appeared in the MCHK, Coroner’s Court and the High Court in Hong Kong. He is one of the few doctors in Hong Kong who is a practicing accredited mediator, and also doing voluntary work for the Land Tribunal, and the Hong Kong Catholic Marriage Advisory Council.

Dr. Law’s passion and continuous commitment is no doubt a role model to our profession. He has played a pivotal role in supporting the development of the O&G profession in Hong Kong, and with his unfailing dedication, continues to inspire us to strive to serve.

Ms President, it is my great honour to present Dr Law Chi Lim, Robert to you for conferment of the Honorary Fellowship of our College.
