He obtained his Membership from Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) in 1995 and elevated to Fellowship in 2007. He obtained Fellowship from Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (HKAM) in 1997, and from our College in 2002.

After general Obstetrics and Gynaecology training, Professor LEUNG focused on the field of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. He received overseas training in Perinatal Centre, Mount Sinai Hospital, University of Toronto in 1999 and Fetal Medicine Unit, University College Hospital, London in 2002 – 2003. He was the first subspecialist in Maternal Fetal Medicine in Hong Kong accredited by RCOG in 2003 (and subsequently accredited by our College in 2007).

Professor LEUNG worked in QMH and TYH from 1990 – 2005. He was then promoted to Consultant in Kwong Wah Hospital (KWH) in 2005, and he served as Chief of Service in Department of O&G, KWH for eleven years from 2010 – 2021. Over these 30 years of service in Hospital Authority (HA) Hospitals, Professor LEUNG contributed enormously to various aspects of clinical service in Hong Kong. In particular, he has been developing: (1) the new public funded algorithms for prenatal screening and diagnosis under the Strategic Service Framework for Genetic and Genomic Services, including the latest FMPRG platform for WES & WGS; (2) management and territory-wide audit of massive postpartum haemorrhage; (3) prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of hepatitis B virus under the Hong Kong Viral Hepatitis Action Plan; (4) Baby friendly Hospital Initiative; (5) advocacy of universal screening for domestic violence in pregnancy; & others. He has participated in different committees and working groups in HA and his role is usually instrumental. Professor LEUNG is currently a member of HA Board since 2021, further contributing beyond the scope of our specialty.

Apart from clinical service, Professor LEUNG was also very active in academic advancement, mainly in the field of Obstetrics and Maternal Fetal Medicine. He published more than 220 papers in peer reviewed journals and presented more than 340 lectures / abstracts in local and international conferences. Professor LEUNG obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree (MD) from HKU in 2010, with the title of his thesis - Rapid aneuploidy testing or traditional karyotyping, or both, in prenatal diagnosis. He was appointed by CUHK & HKU as Honorary Clinical Professor in 2016 and 2017 respectively. Professor LEUNG provided huge training and research support to our specialist and subspecialist trainees at both hospital and our College levels.

Professor LEUNG has been serving our College since 2006 as members of (1) Research Subcommittee; (2) Clinical audit subcommittee; (3) Maternal and Fetal Medicine Subspecialty Board; (4) Subspecialty Committee; & others. In the following 10 years, Professor LEUNG served our College in many different positions and he was elected to be our College President in 2016 – 2018. Among various accomplishments during his presidentship, Professor LEUNG successfully brought the MRCOG Part 3 examination back to Hong Kong in November 2017. He also led our College to successfully bid the RCOG World Congress 2021 in Hong Kong (which was subsequently postponed to 2025 because of the COVID-19 epidemic). Under his leadership, the recruitment of new trainees to our specialty has been improved. After stepping down from the post of our College President, Professor LEUNG is currently serving Hong Kong Academy of Medicine as Honorary Secretary and leading a Task Force on well-being of Trainees & Fellows.

The contribution from Professor LEUNG to our Specialty is not confined to Hong Kong only. He participated in many international and National working groups, committees, serving as editorial board members and journal reviewers. He has also given lectures in many cities in Mainland China and overseas. In addition, Professor LEUNG has been willing to provide expert opinion in medico-legal cases. This is a very demanding task in terms of time and expertise. Only very few Fellows are qualified and willing to help, and Professor LEUNG is one of them.

In summary, Professor LEUNG has provided significant contribution to the development of our Specialty in terms of clinical service, research and training. In addition, Professor LEUNG has further consolidated and strengthened the collaboration between Hong Kong and our national / international partners. Therefore, Ms President, it is my great pleasure to propose Professor LEUNG Wing Cheong to our College for consideration as Honorary Fellow in 2022.
